City of Westminster
This area situated on the north bank of the River Thames was realigned in 1965, and now is officially the City of Westminster. The motto for the city is: “O Lord, watch over the City.” Early history records this area as the site for a temple to Apollo in the Roman times. When the Romans left in 410AD, the Anglos and Saxons came and set up their centre just south and west of where Roman Londonium stood. It became “West Mynstre” as a Saxon place of worship was constructed on a sight called Thorney Island. This church has come to be known as the seat of government where the coronations are held for monarchs. The Houses of Parliament, Whitehall, 10 Downing Street, the Foreign Office and the reigning monarch’s London residence, Buckingham Palace, are located very close to Westminster Abbey. Called “the West End” by locals, this area not only contains the political power of the country but also cultural. Parks, shopping, and theaters abound in their respective locations including Hyde Park, St. James’ Park, Green Park, Kensington Gardens, Regents Park, Piccadilly, Regents Street, Covent Garden, Leicester Square, Royal Opera House, Royal Albert Hall, the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Gallery, and the National Portrait Museum. The population of Westminster grows to over one million each day as workers and tourists come to this hub of London and all but two of the underground lines pass under Westminster’s streets. It has seven bridges that give cars and trains access to the borough as well as four main line train stations that serve different parts of the country.
Prayer Requests for this Borough
City of Westminster
Psalm 71:14-16
New Living Translation (NLT)
14 But I will keep on hoping for your help;
I will praise you more and more.
15 I will tell everyone about your righteousness.
All day long I will proclaim your saving power,
though I am not skilled with words.[a]
16 I will praise your mighty deeds, O Sovereign Lord.
I will tell everyone that you alone are just.
Please pray for the peoples of Westminster as many from all over the world gather in the historic buildings to live, work and engage in the marketplace. As the government passes and the nation abides by the Acts of Parliament made into law in this borough, pray for God to be known also as their “Right, Honorable Friend”.
