London at night

City of London

The City of London is that....a city.  It has its own government called the City of London Corporation and is led by The Lord Mayor of London with its administrative centre located at The Guildhall. Its history traces back to the Roman era and its current boundaries have not expanded too far from the ancient walls of “Londonium”.  When the Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, the square mile area continued to be the centre for merchants establishing ties with Northwest Europe.  When William the Conqueror made his way north from the Battle of Hastings, the Saxon leaders of the “Lundenburgh” area agreed to surrender without struggle on condition that their merchant/guilds area would remain under AngloSaxon autonomy.  It is now known as the richest square mile in the world and is one of the major business and financial centres of the world including the Bank of England and the London Stock Exchange.  As many as 500 banks representing other countries of the world have offices within the “Square Mile”.  The estimated residential population (under 10,000) compared to the estimated daytime employee population (340,000) is extreme.  The Barbican estate is home to the majority of the residential population.  The City’s motto is“Dominedirige nos” -Lord, guide us.
