Haringey-2

Borough of Haringey

This north London borough amalgamated the areas of Hornsey, Wood Green and Tottenham and makes up a large part of the multi-cultural hub of London.  The River Lea runs through the eastern edge of the borough and has seen industries come and go.  The river was a main route for farmers to get their grain to London and for coal to reach the factories. Mills, which lined the riverbank, produced flour, leather and gunpowder.  Furniture was also a major industry and the area housed the largest furniture manufacturer.  When the factory was closed and demolished, housing estates came to replace the large tract of land. Haringey has been home to several sports venues.  Harringay Stadium and Harringay Arena hosted greyhound and speedway racing, ice hockey, the Horse of the Year Show and the London Olympics in 1948.  The 1950’s saw Billy Graham lead several weeks of evangelistic meetings.  These venues were demolished and have given rise to a new area of retail shops.  Currently White Hart Lane Stadium in Tottenham is the home of the Tottenham Hotspurs, a football club named after Harry Hotspur who owned the majority of the land in Tottenham in the late 1800’s.  Alexandra Palace, located on Muswell Hill, was the site where the BBC made the first television broadcasts in 1936.  The palace, known locally as Ally Pally, was built in 1873 as a large venue and park for entertainment and leisure. Unfortunately after its first week of being opened, the palace burnt to the ground.  The BBC continued using the site for broadcasting and the palace was rebuilt and opened again in 1975. It hosts a variety of annual exhibitions as well as an indoor ice skating rink.

Haringey

Nov. 17, 2011

Psalm 86:11
New Living Translation (NLT)
11 Teach me your ways, O Lord,
that I may live according to your truth!
  Grant me purity of heart,
so that I may honor you.

Please pray for the peoples of Haringey to understand the importance their borough has in London.  Praise God for the many who flocked to Haringey in the 1950’s and were changed forever.  Pray for the nations living here to walk in His Truth and revere His name.

NO!  It’s not about taking your old sofa down to the beach or trying to stand up on it while strapped to the roof of the car.  It’s about making deep connections with people who live in your adopted borough!
