Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham
This inner London borough north of the River Thames was originally a rural area that provided rest on the main routes leading west out of London. Shepherds used to rest their flocks in a piece of ground that came to be known as Shepherd’s Bush. The area of Hammersmith was once home to Britain’s largest municipal power station.
The area of White City gets its name from the white stucco used to finish off buildings that were used in the Franco-British Exhibition also held in 1908. The 1908 Olympics, originally to be held in Italy, were relocated to White City after Mount Vesuvius erupted.
Hammersmith is home to the BBC TV Centre which was built in the 1960s and which contains in the centre courtyard a 40-obelisk topped with the Greek sun god Helios.
