Borough of Hackney

This inner London borough is made up of the three areas, Shoreditch (1148), Hackney (1198) and Stoke Newington (1274).  These areas were farming communities in the Middlesex countryside.

Ethnic diversity has been a major characteristic of this borough. Jewish people and Africans came to the area in the 1600’s. The borough still attracts people from all over the world.  There is an estimated Turkish population of 50,000 and  all the local amenities to help service the this community, such as food shops, restaurants, beauty shops and local men’s social clubs where they gather to drink tea, watch football, visit and play cards.  The borough also boasts the Dalston Market, one of London’s most diverse markets  as far as cultures that are represented. They include Indian, Chinese, Jamaican, Turkish, Kurdish, African, AfroCaribbean and English.  In this borough it is not uncommon to see a mosque next to a church and within proximity to a number of Orthodox Jewish synagogues.  Parts of the borough experienced heavy bombing during the Blitz.  Bethnal Green Underground station was levelled as it housed many people seeking shelter in its tunnels.  Today, former refugees and immigrants from North Vietnam live in the Bethnal Green area.  Hackney Marshes is known for a large concentration of football pitches (87 at one count) and is known as a hub for artists.

Prayer Requests for this Borough

Hackney

Nov. 17, 2011

Psalm 66:16-20
New Living Translation (NLT)
16 Come and listen, all you who fear God,
and I will tell you what he did for me.
17 For I cried out to him for help,
    praising him as I spoke.
18 If I had not confessed the sin in my heart,
the Lord would not have listened.
19 But God did listen!
He paid attention to my prayer.
20 Praise God, who did not ignore my prayer
or withdraw his unfailing love from me.

Please pray for the peoples of Hackney to come and hear what the Lord has done.  May they know that He truly listens and gives heed to the words of their prayers.  May the nations gathered in this borough have such a spiritual awareness of the iniquity in their heart and seek after their Creator to remove it for them by calling on Jesus’ name.  May the fear that holds these groups in bondage be bin Jesus’ name.

Couch Surfing

NO!  It’s not about taking your old sofa down to the beach or trying to stand up on it while strapped to the roof of the car.  It’s about making deep connections with people who live in your adopted borough!
