Borough of Bexley
Historical Background
This London borough located on the eastern edge of London and south of the River Thames grew up around the main arterial road leading from London to Dover through Canterbury. Being on the outskirts of London, Bexley’s name, “clearing in the box wood”, still indicates its rural surroundings.
Both Roald Dahl, author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Quentin Blake, the illustrator for many of Roald Dahl’s children’s books, lived in Bexley. Alexander Selkirk, the actual castaway who was the inspiration for Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe, came from the area. Political figures such as former Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath and Lady Margaret Thatcher, as well as her husband Denis, all have ties to the borough.
Prayer Requests for this Borough
Bexley
Psalm 89:5-8
New Living Translation (NLT)
5 All heaven will praise your great wonders, Lord;
myriads of angels will praise you for your faithfulness.
6 For who in all of heaven can compare with the Lord?
What mightiest angel is anything like the Lord?
7 The highest angelic powers stand in awe of God.
He is far more awesome than all who surround his throne.
8 O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies!
Where is there anyone as mighty as you, O Lord?
You are entirely faithful.
Please pray for the peoples of Bexley. May this clearing of box wood be filled with the knowledge of the God of faithfulness.
